I'm pretty sure that wind contributes to the height of waves in inland bodies of water. Not sure about the ocean, but I think so. (There's a wave there.)
An hourglass is one type of timekeeping device that you don't have to wind. "Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives."

Wind and the occurrence of the tides both affect the height of waves. Very nice picture and good bonus usage with the hourglass.
