Monogramming

I'm not sure why I thought of this this morning, OH, now I know. The project leaders for one project I work with are sending me a gift that only *I* can use. So, what, a monogrammed towel? Then I remembered the time back in middle school that I had a sweater with my name monogrammed on it: Pamela. I was at a skating rink with some friends, and very shy at that time. A cute older guy passed me and said Hi Pamela! I was so surprised and flattered, and then I looked down and realized the sweater I was wearing...

Now I think it would be cool to find a sweater like that at a thrift store - with some other person's name - and wear it around. Confuse the hell out of people - HA! you think you know me!!

Cake eating cat

I got this photo at an estate sale. Paid nothing for it really. I just loved it. I would never let my cat do such a thing, but it's still a great photo.

Circus

So, do you think circuses are becoming obsolete? We have one coming to town, and I wonder what age group still is excited by the circus. Likely under 5? I was just thinking that in this age of super special effects, the reality of the circus may seem boring to any child over 5. What do you think?

Law Firm Names

On the way to work this morning (on the bus for the last time - I start biking again tomorrow) I looked out the window instead of reading. I saw an office, law firm. The name on the door was Paulson, Paulson, Paulson & Paulson. WTF? Amazing. They'd get so much better business if they named it Paulson to the 4th degree [note I have no idea how to format that, but hopefully you understand what I mean].

So, I did a search and the Wall Street Journal has a brief article about funny law firm names. There's a blog post here. Some of the best real ones they found were Low, Ball, & Lynch. And Payne & Fears. Craque & Anutt. (ok made that last one up. was that so obvious?)

Zinc Finger

Since I'm all about music, I thought I'd follow Heather's lead and get my band name, album cover art, and album title. So...

Zinc Finger presents:

Confused Power with Greatness

I love all of it. And, on a side note, learned something new about zinc fingers, proteins that can bind with DNA.

To Do it Yourself:
use the first link. no matter what the title of the article is, it is now your band's name.

now on to the second link. the last four words of the quote is your album title.

now for the cover art. go to this link and the third pic is your album cover art.

Grab Bag

It's a random sort of day.

Heather, do you ever just want to say 'would you please just leave me alone?' to one of your callers? Or even G to his clients? Man, I so wish I could do that today.

Does it mean I'm gay if I saw a woman last night at the climbing gym that was so 'ripped' as my trainer says that it was amazing? That I stared at her until I could no longer see her? I guess if I didn't follow her and go introduce myself and drool all over her, then I'm not gay. I was so in awe though. She was a little bit too muscle-y (a few veins sticking out on her arms) but mostly just greatly in shape. Wow.

I can't believe Mitt Romney is really in the running still. I pity all the puppies in the US if he gets the nomination. I don't know how I feel about McCain anymore. Hillary is looking old (and isn't it weird that we have to refer to her by her first name?). Bill Clinton has two hearing aids, did you know that? What happened to Obama?

My plants are droopy. I guess they need water.

Oh, if you haven't seen Once, it's a really nice movie, with a great soundtrack.

Can you imagine? Twins who were separated at birth got married without realizing they were brother and sister. Oh my.

Breathe. Deep breath. "Don't worry, 'bout a thing, cause every little thing's gonna be all right." That's my mantra right now. Just a busy couple of days.

My favorite foreign words

There's been some talk of words in other blogs, and I've been thinking about this for a while actually. Below are my favorite words in various languages. Oops, except English. I'll have to think about that one.

Doch - German - negates a negative. So, if you said 'she's ugly' and I said 'doch' then I'm disagreeing and saying she's pretty. It's such a useful word and can be said with such force, as can most German words I suppose.

Ahorita - Spanish - hmm.. I always thought it meant 'in a little bit' but it means 'right now' according to freetranslation.com. I learned it in Mexico - perhaps there's a different meaning there? In any event, I love it because it's so fun to say, and because it's a play on 'now' (ahora).

Japanese - deska - has no literal translation I don't think (I'm moving into languages I know less about). It is a word that makes a statement a question. For you Heroes fans, listen to Hiro or one of the other Japanese characters speaking and when they ask a question, that word is on the end. I like it because it's a peculiarity of Japanese (I don't know of other languages that do that though I am SURE there's one) and because it's one of the few Japanese words I know. I was on a work trip in Vietnam and happened across a TV show that was teaching Japanese, and I learned how to say 'how much does this cost [question]' and used it when I went to Japan the next week! In a thrift store in Japan! It was great. Of course I couldn't understand the answer, but hey, that's why there's pen and paper.

Alor - French - I think it means something like 'ok' - sort of one of those filler words. It's just so French, and when you say it you have to be French or have a French attitude. I could be wrong about this one - spelling and meaning - I know so little French.

Magwanani - Shona - Good morning. Again, I like how it sounds, and I used it quite a bit in Zimbabwe. It's nice to be able to connect, even simply, with people in their language.

Babci - Polish - grandmother. How can you not like grandmothers?

American Sign Language - Thank you. It's easy to learn, and so important.

That's it for now...your trip around the world.

Marilyn Monroe Moment

Just walked to get a smoothie since I still can't chew. Walking back, had the shake in one hand and my wallet in the other. Slow people in front of me, walked over a subway grate, and up goes my skirt to my waist! And I couldn't get it down with my hands because I didn't want to dump the smoothie. Damn funny. I'm wearing my Halloween underwear too - has a black cat on the front and back, and the back also has a castle and a full moon, and the words "I'm the cat's meow!". !!! Lordy.

I feel like a true blogger now - had a funny moment, gotta go blog it! :-)
