Damn all you uplifting people!

I'm trying to wallow in my melancholy and I look at people's blogs and get emails and dammit, I'm feeling better. Sigh.

OK, this is from Not Fainthearted's site - some kind of blog ring thing. And FINE, I'll start being more optimistic. Sigh. Damn you all.

Five things I remember/treasure from 2008

1. Getting the phone call that I got the house I bought.

2. Having fish lips aimed at me from Cutiepie.

3. The support of extremely close friends who rallied to my cause when I needed it the most (often).

4. Catching really big fishies in Maine.

5. Getting rid of migraines, mostly, by making my body strong all over. And reorganizing my weight on my body to boot!

Five things I look forward to in 2009

1. Skiing with my new boots.

2. Rock climbing with new friends.

3. Having a garden with herbs.

4. Finishing my damn kitchen.

5. Making quilts (for my brother for 2008, and an art quilt for 2009 pick)

7 random things about me

Tera tagged somebody named Pamela and for some reason I am the one who has to fill the darn thing out. Anyhoos, here goes.

1. When I was young, I once got bit on the finger by a squirrel as I was feeding it a peanut. I felt the single canine. It didn't break the skin so there was no trip to the emergency room. It did not contribute to my hatred of squirrels in the current day.
2. I used to eat butter sandwiches when I was young. Just writing that makes me queasy. But then again, I eat bread with butter to this day, so what's the difference?
3. I'm double jointed in my left elbow.
4. It wasn't until my late 20's that I knew there were no such things as pink lemons for pink lemonade.
5. My family was on the local news in the 70's for making a big web of string in our backyard.
6. Huh... was having trouble thinking of something else, and just did a regular habit when thinking or anxious. I like to feel out curly/kinky hairs on my head and pull them out. I met one other person (in college - an Asian guy) who did the same thing. The one I just pulled out was gray. I have a couple hairs on my head that curl to like less than 1/4 inch round. I love to find those. I don't have whatever disorder that is where people just pull their hair out and make bald spots. I just find the curly/kinky ones. No, I do not pull out ones in my crotch.
7. My lucky number is 8, I think because I found a dollar walking home from school when I was 8 and it was on the 8th day of some month.

If you'd like to be tagged, have at it!

Everybody who's anyone is doing it

1. Using the questions below, type your answer to each of the questions one at a time into Flickr Search.

2. Using the result, select an image from the first page.

3. Copy and paste each of the URLs for the images into fd’s mosaic maker. Choose the 4 x 3 or 3 x 4 option. There are 12 questions, so you’ll need 12 images.

4. Save your mosaic and upload it to your post. Or print it out and mail it to Grandma. She’ll think you painted it yourself and she’ll invite her friends over to make them jealous. The questions:

1. What is your first name?
2. What is your favorite food?
3. The name of your high school?
4. What is your favorite color?
5. Who is your celebrity crush?
6. Favorite drink?
7. Dream vacation?
8. Favorite dessert?
9. What do you want to be when you grow up?
10. What do you love most in life?
11. One word to describe you?
12. Your flickr name?

I feel bad because I do want to give credit for the photos, but I don't want people to know my words! But I'll get over the guilt.

Quirk is as Quirk does

Here are the rules:1. link the person who tagged you, Tera. 2. mention the rules in your blog…3. tell about 6 unspectacular quirks of yours4. tag 6 following bloggers by linking them. leave a comment on each of the tagged blogger’s blogs letting them know they’ve been tagged

1. I have a thing for plastic bags. I cannot throw them away, because there's ALWAYS a use to be found for them. When my husband and I moved into our house, at our old townhouse he found the various places in the house that I had hidden plastic bags so he wouldn't find them and throw them away. I haven't heard the end of it, and never will. I have ONCE put a bag of plastic bags in the plastic bag recycling bin at the supermarket, but they were all bags that were ripped and had no other use that I could think of.

2. For the most part, I have the stomach of a goat. I eat food that is somewhat marginal and I'm usually ok. I was obviously distracted Monday night by something that made me eat something that was beyond marginal, and even today I am eating white rice for lunch. So, on second thought, maybe it wasn't the food... And let me tell you, I like farting, mind you, but when white rice and applesauce cause the amount of gas I'm producing, I'm even getting sick of it!

3. I do not like dogs licking me in the face.

4. I do like licking guys in the face, specifically the nose. Not random guys - boyfriend or equivalent.

5. I have the same middle name as my mother who has the same middle name as her mother, except my mother uses her mother's first name as her middle name even though legally it's the same as mine. If I had a little girl, my middle name would be her first name and I would if I could make my mom's first name her middle name.

6. Cher and I are twins separated at birth and I kinda like it. Though damn her for getting Sonny first.

What time am I?

You're the time of day right around sunrise, when the sky is still a pale bluish gray. The streets are empty, and the grass and leaves are a little bit sparkly with dew. You are the sound of a few chirpy birds outside the window. You are quiet, peaceful, and contemplative. If you move slowly, it's not because you're lazy ? it's because you know there's no reason to rush. You move like a relaxed cat, pausing for deep stretches that make your muscles feel alive. You are long sips of tea or coffee (out of a mug that's held with both hands) that slowly warm your insides just as the sun is brightening the sky.

Hmm...maybe because I'm taking this in the early morning on a Sunday... Not sure I move slowly any other time! :-)

Great Interview Experiment - MEEEE

So, Ami over at Writing: My Life was kind enough to volunteer to interview people whose interviewers kinda dropped the ball. You can go to her post to read the whole interview.

Meet Someone New

I decided to take part in the Great Interview Experiment. It is my pleasure to introduce ChildsPlayX2. I really enjoyed reading his blog - it's very well written and very interesting. Since I feared that I could keep reading and reading to find more nuggets to ask about, I just needed to stop and ask a few and let it be.

Q:It's obvious you love your children and enjoy almost every moment with them. Do you enjoy other people's children just as much? Would you ever adopt a child?

A1) I have always loved being around children. My first "real" job was a sports coordinator for a large non-profit. I then became a camp and after-school coordinator and worked with kids all of the time. Now, I work for the YMCA and my job is to make sure the youth in our community have strong programs that develop character. I miss working directly with kids now, though. There's something about showing a child that you care - especially a child who needs a positive adult role model - that makes life worthwhile. As for adoption? My wife was adopted as a baby and we would definitely consider adoption if we decide that we could handle another child. Right now, two-year-old twins are quite enough, thank you!

Q: If you could, would you want to live in an 80's world? Or do you just enjoy the music from that time?

A2) I had more hair in the 80's. And that was the time when music was a daily companion in my life but I have no real yearning to return to the days of feathered hair and acid wash jeans. I recently started naming my blog posts from 80's lyrics because I wanted a bit of a challenge and I thought my regular readers would get a kick out of it. It also encourages comments - which I LOVE.

Q: Do you think you could ever actually win Fear Factor? Why/why not? Would you take your son on the new show coming up that's kind of like Fear Factor for dads and sons? [I personally love Fear Factor and wish they would bring it back.]

A3) The masculine side of me wants to scream, "HECK YEAH! I COULD SO WIN FEAR FACTOR!" But the part of me that is terrified of wiggly things crawling over my entire body and my inability to choke down anything that is still moving would certainly preclude me from winning Fear Factor. I would do really well on the agility stuff, however, so maybe I'd have a chance. As for taking my son on a Father/Son Fear Factor... I don't think so. I would want to enjoy bonding with my son and I don't think screaming like a little girl while cock roaches crawled all over me would imprint the right image of me for my son.

Q: What's your second biggest regret? (You listed in 100 things about you your biggest regret, and considering who I am, had to ask.)

A4) My second biggest regret? I'm really not sure. I guess there are a few things in my life I maybe would have done differently but I have grown so much as a person in the past 10 years that I strive to look at those experiences as learning tools that make me who I am today. We all need failure and obstacles in our lives to help us grow and to help us appreciate the wonders in our life. As Thomas Edison once said, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."

Q: Have you ever wanted to earn your living as a writer?

A5) Many people who blog have aspirations of writing. When I started blogging it was mostly to see if I could stick with something like this for longer than a month or so. My cousin Mighty Girl (http://mightygirl.com) was enjoying her blogging experience so I thought I'd try it as well. Soon after, we got pregnant and the blog became a way for me to keep relatives and friends up to date on our life and how we were doing. I then realized that this blog could be a gift to my children as I want them to know as much as possible about their childhood and their father. After four years of doing this I now consider myself a writer. I love putting my thoughts on paper and, for the first time, I've actually thought of writing a book. One idea would be a rhyming children's book while another idea would somehow combine my love for managing and providing leadership for my staff and my love for parenting. We'll see how that turns out.

Q: Finally, you noted in your 100 things about you that your dad died when you were very young and that that was the greatest influence in your life. Can you expand on that?

A6) My father died when I was six. I never got to know him and it hurts me to this day. There's this little place deep in my chest that still aches when I think about what I missed. That experience has influenced me in countless ways. For instance, because I grew up with a single mother, I understand women better than I understand men. I don't have any strong impressions on what a man is supposed to be - which can be liberating and frustrating at different times. in the same vein, I have no blueprint on how to be a father - which frees me to set my own ideals and desires in motion without any outside influences. And finally, it has taught me to never take life for granted. A part of me is convinced that I won't live to see my children grow old and that is a driving force behind my passion for fatherhood. I don't ever want to cheat my children out of spending time with their father. I don't take my role for granted and I hope that my passion for life is passed down to them. I don't care what other people think of me. I really don't. The only thing that matters is that my children think highly of me. I'll happily dance down a busy street with a two-year-old holding each hand singing Fergie's Big Girls Don't Cry (my daughter's favorite song) at the top of my lungs if it means my children will remember that moment for the rest of their lives. And even if they don't, I surely will.

Woo-woo's meme tag

Woo-woo tagged me last week with a meme (so I am no longer a tag virgin). I had to stretch some things in different directions, but it was indeed interesting to go back and look at my blog to see what's there, so thanks woooo. Link 5 proves that I'm vain.

Link 1 is a little bit of FAMILY: Happy Birthday Dad!

Link 2 is a little bit of FRIEND: Long Overdue Thank You

Link 3 is a little bit of YOURSELF: Declaration of Imperfection

Link 4 should be YOUR LOVE: You got to know...

Link 5 can be ANYTHING YOU LIKE: the lion photo

*** INSTRUCTIONS: ***
1. Post 5 links to 5 of your previously written posts. The posts have to relate to the 5 key words given below.
2. Tag 5 other friends to do this meme. Try to tag at least 2 new acquaintances (if not, your current blog buddies will do) so that you get to know them each a little bit better.
3. Don’t forget to read the archived post and leave comments.

I am going to pass this on to a couple people, but no obligation to do it, obviously. It would be nice to see what you link to on your blog.
Churlita
Heart
Squirrel (you might have to do some writing to fill all these in)
Tera (so she can post without having to write anything new)

Sixesss

Read the Meme over at Hearts and Eslocura's. Mine isn't as good as theirs (not as complete).

Six Guilty Pleasures some people would not associate with me
- Trash magazines. I used to love People magazine. Now I that can read it in 10 minutes, I've moved up in the world to Entertainment Weekly.
- Trash food. Once in a while I just have to eat crap. It's good! Crinkly cheese twists (bright orange). Hot dogs. Kraft macaroni and cheese.
- Farting. I'm a gassy girl and it gives me great pleasure to fart. At first I wouldn't use Beano because it took away the gas. But now I realize there are times when it's really NOT good to fart and so I take it.
- Winning an argument. I can be rather merciless and so enjoy winning an argument. I know better than to continue one that I can't win, but I try, and love it when I do. [though people who know me well wouldn't be surprised I think]
- Smoking a cigar. Started I think even before my dad died. I do like a cigar once in a while.
- Speeding. I love driving fast and getting away with it. I don't always get away with it though.

Six I wish I had the courage for.
Honestly, I try to try everything that I think will bring me pleasure. Eventually.

Six I've abandoned or made peace with (these are all the latter).
- My love of KC and the Sunshine Band.
- Wearing a bra that makes me look like I have breasts.
- All the others from above.

Tera's a Clever Girl

1. I am dying to know about the birth of your love for wildlife and/the outdoors.
Growing up in a family of six kids, I think the cheapest thing for my parents to do was to take us all for a hike/fishing/apple picking/strawberry picking/to the zoo/whatever. So we did stuff outdoors a lot. Plus we had a field behind our house and we'd play there. But I never camped in a tent until I was 18 or 19 and it freaked me out! I quickly got over that though, and learned to love it. Nature is great, even the wildlife. :-)

2. If you could pick 3 of your blogger friends to spend an evening out on the town with, who would pick, and what would you do?
Well, since there are four of the Quad, I wouldn't want to start a Quadwar (ha), so I'd leave them out of consideration. And since the person who asks you the question is always included, I'd add Susan, Heather, and DD to Tera. I think no matter what we did it would be fun. Crazy weird, but fun. Perhaps a Chippendale show? Nothing like gay, well built men dancing for you. If there are any with chest hair, they would be mine though.

3. Your best friend is considering leaving her husband because she is not happy anymore...what advice do you give her?
I would ask her if she has talked things out with her husband, and told him what she needs/why she's not happy to see what the response would be. If she didn't like the response or if didn't seem to make a difference, and didn't have kids, then listen to herself, as she only has one life to live. If she did have kids, take some time and think about it. But saying that, I know how hard it is to listen to yourself.

Recently there was an article about marriage and love. A woman celebrating her 10 year anniversary. A quote from it:

I know of plenty of people who "won," who got the mate of their desire, the one they believed they needed in order to feel loved. And yet, the winning didn't change anything. They still don't feel loved.

People say, "Oh, it doesn't matter." They say, "You shouldn't need a man in your life to complete you." I believed that for a while, then beat myself up for wanting -- really wanting -- love. That was a big waste of time. If you need love, you need love. I don't think it's anything to be ashamed of.

My life is better with him, that's all. I am a better person with him. I don't think a sense of self-worth comes from being happily married for 10 years. I think it works the other way around.

4. What are your 5 favorite movies of all time?
Believe it or not, but this is the hardest question for me! I see movies, I love them, I move on. Two that I know for sure are Grease and the Sound of Music. Cheesy musicals. Gotta love 'em. Shrek would likely be the third. Fourth and Fifth rotate. (I like weird, cheesy, intellectual, sappy, funny, beautiful movies, though perhaps not all in one package. Examples: Truly, Madly, Deeply; 32 Short Films about Glenn Gould; Princess Bride; Amadeus)

5. What is one characteristic that you possess which sets you apart from the rest?
Brutal honesty. Sometimes it takes me a while to be honest, either with myself, or others, but eventually I get there.

Interview rules: 1) If you would like to be interviewed leave me a comment saying "interview me".2) I will respond by emailing you 5 questions, I get to pick the questions.3) Update your blog with a post containing the answers.4) Include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same post.5) When others comment asking to be interviewed, you ask them 5 questions.

A Virgin No More - Meme

Thank you Susan for sending me into the world of meme's. It didn't hurt too much. :-)

1. You've just had that "I'm naked in public" nightmare again. Where exactly were you naked at? Who all was there? Were you embarrassed or rockin' out with your co..well, you get the point.
Um, I've never had that nightmare and never will likely. I'm a closet exhibitionist. :-) But even if it happened out of the blue (boom! I'm naked) I'd likely just smile and wave and either go on about my business or saunter away. Maybe I'd show people near me my bestest bruise of the moment. (I'm making the assumption that I wouldn't get attacked because I'd be naked - otherwise I'd run like hell!) Later, alone, I might freak out. Or might not... Depends on whether people looked at me with disgust and horror, or just simply shock. No matter what, it would be nice to be the center of attention. :-)

2. What's one moment in your life that changed the way you live it? Do you wish this had never happened or are you glad?
A moment. A single moment. Hmmm... One is when I truly gave up 99% of hope that the love of my life would never want to be with me. It made me put on a pretty stiff mask to say f-you to the world - you can't hurt me, I'm a burly girl inside and out. It took a long time for that to start balancing out. Of course I wish it had never happened. I would have rather been met with open arms/heart/mind/soul, and had the rest of his life with him (the 4 or so years it was to be).

3. They say everyone has one musical artist that could sing the soundtrack to their life. Who's your artist?
I'm sorry, but there's no way one artist could sing the soundtrack of my life. I tried, really, for this meme, but I'd be forcing it, and didn't want to do that. Mine is a compilation. So the below is the song/artist for each of the moments requested.

love scene: Well, the sex would be like the post a couple of posts ago. Otherwise, i carry your heart (Michael Hedges) [me and my poems set to music]
rock bottom sad scene: Everybody Hurts (REM); Don't Give Up (Peter Gabriel) [theme: rock bottom with hope and support]
moment of enlightenment scene: Only the Good Die Young (Billy Joel) [I tried so hard to be the good girl growing up, but this song let me realize that I could/should let the little devil out a bit more, and I suppose let the devil in some too, and have fun, dammit!]
closing credits: You Learn (Alanis Morrisette) [because everything you do, you learn from - past, present, future.]

4. You just went snorkeling. You're enjoying all the fishes when all the sudden you're eaten by a whale! What do you find on the insides of the whale? Who all is hangin' out in there?
Oh, inside is a wonderful party, filled with various persons/creatures interested in the sea, all getting to know each other. Jacques Cousteau, a giant squid, Nemo (Captain and little fishy Nemo), Kevin Kline (he was in Pirates of Penzance on broadway), Sherman of Sherman's Lagoon, Johnny Depp, etc. (who else??) I think the squid's going to win the arm-wrestling contest.

5. You're running late for a drink with one of your blogland people. They call you because they think you've stood them up.
What's their ringtone?
RESPECT (Aretha Franklin)
Who is it and why on earth did you say yes to the invitation in the first place? It's Susan of course. And I said yes because I want to see the famous boobs in person and because we're going to go off and get drunk together and sing all the words to all the songs we know all night.

Interview rules:

1. If you would like to participate, leave me a comment saying "Interview me."

2. I will respond by emailing you five questions. I get to pick the questions.

3. Update your blog with a post containing your answers to the questions.

4. Include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same post.

5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you ask them five questions
