A quote I needed to read

...The most valuable thing I can think of is to be grateful for suffering. That is a sublime feeling, and completely inexplicable and illogical, but no one doesn't suffer. so the degree to which you can be aware of your own humanity is the degree to which you can accept, with open eyes, your suffering. To be grateful for your suffering is to be grateful for your humanity, because what else are you going to do -- say "no thanks"? It's there. "Smile and accept," said Mother Teresa. And she was talking to people who had it rough.

Hmmm... Guess who said this?
Stephen Colbert. Quoted in Rolling Stone article.

Of course, shared this with a friend, and his reply:
Honestly, the only benefit i derive from suffering is the opportunity to hone my whining.

That is an amazing way to view suffering. Gives the rest of us something to at least pretend to strive for.

I think there is something to the idea there is something sublime to suffering...because it is frequently tied to a particular remembering of joy.

"Smile and accept" is a very optimistic approach. I can accept, the smiling comes later when I'm through suffering.

I whine about while I'm going through it, but definitely appreciate some of the lessons I've learned from suffering too.

I feel sad for the friend. Perhaps he'll grow into a different awareness.....

I had to go through everything I had to go through in order to be exactly where I am today. And 'here' is a darn good place to be. :-)

Well-honed whining is a great asset.

Laura, I thought so.
Ananda, that's yet another way to look at it.
