I'm so [adjective]

I think it's hilarious that for every little thing my boss needs me to buy into and agree with what she's saying. It's not allowed for her to just tell me, 'make it so', or for me to disagree with her but go with her choice since she's the boss. There has to be consensus, and sometimes I just don't have the patience or desire for consensus.

I thought it was teutonic, but that's not the right adjective. Does anyone have the right one? and don't be mean...

This is a little mean, but I always think, "insecure" when I hear people behaving like that.

Doesn't your boss have something better to do than to be your personal thought police? Or do you work in some sort of compound?

Waitwaitwait.

You were asking for an adjective for yourself, not your boss. Sorry. In my hovering and REFRESH REFRESH REFRESHING of your blog hoping that you would just post something... anything... I totally didn't read your blog entry for comprehension.

Anyway, the adjective that immediately comes to mind is "Cocoa-lishious."

...just playing along (you)

...so indecisive (her)

LOL!

I truly think some people / bosses really want consensus.

I truly think that sometimes/many times? I really don't care enough to want to have my mindset changed.

So, I actually WAS looking for an adjective for me - more along the lines of wanting to just go along with authority. kinda.

I'm truly not sure that cocolishious describes it though. How did you know I just farted?

Evile-hmmm, i wonder.

autocratic? dictatorish? is that even a word?

for her, childish and insecure (good one mrt)

for you, impatient and saintly for putting up with her crap.

me? i'd tell her, hey listen. if you need something done just ask me to do it. i don't need to know the whys and how comes. determine what needs to be done, delegate what needs to be delegated and make sure it gets done. that's your job, that's why you make the big bucks. if you want me to become part of the decision making process then you need to give me the responsibility, authority and the paycheck to go with it.

amazingly enough, a very similar conversation got me a significant raise and a promotion at the old store. (lol, no wonder the store manager there was afraid of me a little.)

Wow, I didn't see it that way at all. She's definitely not wishy washy in the opinion dept. And I wouldn't at all say she's insecure. That's just weird that you all are saying that... Odd... Hmm... Interesting... Is it controlling? Hmm... I don't know. I never thought that... huh...

Damn, you would think that the Queen of Semantics would have a good one...but my mind is blank.

I will let you know if something comes to me! Damn!

Okay, I'll go with gratifying

No waitwaitwait (I like that :-)...How about congenial?

Damn, it's a good thing you don't have word verfications! LMAO!

maybe we read something into the situation that you didn't intend. it's possible, god only knows how many times ~per freakin day~ that happens to me. (j is the major culprit/victim when it comes to not getting my meaning.)

is it perhaps a case of 'cover your ass'? or do you think it has more to do with her personality and maybe just needing that extra validation?

How about supportive for you?

Again, It's so weird to get such a different perspective. I thought there was something wrong with ME. Or at least a different world view, which yes, obviously there is. Heather, I'm really not sure. I really interpreted it as someone who needs team consensus and me being willing to live under a dictatorship.

Of course, all this led to a VERY long dream starring my boss, and her getting pissed at me because I didn't act animated when some important guy was talking about his work and basically blew me off to talk to this other guy. When I told her I thought his work was asinine, she got so pissed she wouldn't talk to me. Again, this is the dream.

TERA, no fair reciprocating. :-)

My boss does the same thing and it drives me crazy! Finally I asked him, "Do you want me to do it or to agree that it's the best thing to do? Because if you want me to lie to you I can."
I thought I would get fired but I didn't. He wanted me to agree with him. So now I just keep my mouth shut.

Just another reason I hate my job.

NoRegrets said...

yeah, half the time I'll pretend (fake it!) that I agree, just to get things done.

Oh, and Heather, supposedly I have power but I guess I have little authority. She's ruled this program since day one, and so, while not afraid of change, I think thinks that her way is the right way many times. Which often is the case, I will admit.

My wife works for a woman who insists on consensus, which is in part a result of her religious views. Indeed, it can be a very frustrating way to do anything, because no one ever decides anything, for fear of conflict.

As for my job, I don't know what the hell's going on, so I don't have any idea what my boss wants.

There is nothing wrong with consensus, per se. I make sports analogies a lot, so I see this as the role of a bench coach in baseball. The bench coach is usually a wise old head who advises the manager, takes over if he is ill or gets ejected, but doesn't make any final decisions.

The manager can gather as much input as he wants, but sooner or later he's got to just make the call. If you get paid to make the call, then you own the consequences. Some people are terrified of that.

Hi Michael - see, I'm willing to own the consequences and get paid enough to do that, but I think she as a manager is super conservative and given that she ultimately owns the consequences, wants to be SURE things are perfect. That's part of the picture.
