Recommendations please - movies to see

I went last night to see the place I'll be housesitting. Scary neighborhood, but I'm trying to think positively. I asked the cop as he was filling out my parking pass whether it guaranteed that my car wouldn't be broken into, and he just smiled.

Anyway, so the person I'm housesitting for is very nice. Not only is she continuing the newspaper delivery for me, but she also will put two movies on her Netflix queue for me. Trouble is, I'm used to going to Blockbuster and walking the aisles, and my big boss is in town for the next several days so there's none of my normal time at work to peruse. And I know how you all loving chiming in on what others should do... so....

Please recommend two recent rentals that I should rent. I just rented PS I love you this weekend, so that's off the list.

Thanks!

No Country For Old Men,
The Bucket List,
In Bruges. The latest season of Weeds is out on Netflix now too.

That's my list for you.
I also say sneak in some time on Netflix and look around some. I like getting TV shows more than movies :-)

I'm seconding the suggestion for The Bucket List. We watched it on Friday, and it was so much better than I'd expected.

Did you cry when watching PS I Love you or was I just really hormonal?

Definitely, Maybe isn't bad
The Princess Bride!

Oh, WNG, good idea. Some TV shows... That might be good
I'm not sure I could do the bucket list. Ok, maybe since it's free.
Susan, I almost cried, so I'd say it's a bit of both.

Does it have to be recent?

Because most of the movies I really like are at least 30 years old. My old standbys are "The Philadelphia Story" (1950), "Vertigo" (1958), "The Red Shoes" (1948), and "I Know Where I'm Going" (1945).

Having said that, I've heard some really good things about In Bruges, and I do love love love Weeds.

Do you do subtitles? Paris Je T'aime is really good (and I recently did a presentation on it at an arts conference).

I have not seen, but have heard good things about "Lars and the Real Girl."

Are you looking for something romantic? Funny? Frightening? Knowing what mood I'm matching to is a big help.

I get all my TV fixes from Netflix. Rome, the Tudors, the Wire, Weeds, the L Word, Californication...and all the older shows that I miss like Homicide: Life on the Streets.

Anyway - they have almost every movie or show you can think of, so go wherever your whims take you!

Oh and In Bruges is THE MOST UNDERRATED MOVIE OF THE YEAR!!!

I'm just sayin'...

WNG - don't you have my blog memorized??? Click on the movie subject thingie and you'll see I recommended In Bruges a lonnnng time ago. :-) But thank you. Jeez, all those TV shows - you are right. There's too many.

MRT - I was looking for the newer ones that would cost more than a dollar to rent at Blockbuster. Though I guess I do pay a dollar at Redwhatever. Anyway, I'm flexible. I don't do really scary stuff though. Especially alone in a scary neighborhood!

Have you seen Once yet? It was kind of real and sweet.

NoRegrets said...

I *own* Once! :-)

Ooh yes, No Country for Old Men is fabulous.

But you might like Intacto - it's a few years old now - a Spanish movie, one of my faves of all time.

I have seen Lars and the Real Girl. I thought it was both charming and disturbing at the same time; I'd recommend watching it, though;>

I just remembered - I really liked Kiss Kiss Bang Bang with Robert Downey, Jr. and Val Kilmer.

The Mrs. thought it was too violent, but it is ab-so-frikkin-lutely HILARIOUS.

And violent.

As a backup, there is *ALWAYS* Xanadu. Four words - Gene Kelley on roller skates.

"Everything is Illuminated"
"Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy"

They aren't very recent, but worth the rent - especially the first one.

I recently watched "Vantage Point," "Awake," and "Derailed." They were all pretty good to me!

NoRegrets said...

OK, so it seems I have a movie for every evening of the entire month! Thanks! :-)

I didn't think Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was all that violent. Or maybe I was just too busy drooling over Robert Downey, Jr. addict though he may be.

I am sorry NoR :-(

As an act of contrition may I recommend Lucky Number Slevin?

Nor, she didn't like the finger scenes. The finger and the door scene and the finger and the dog scene. I loved the movie.

This is a few years old, but I liked Zero Effect with Bill Pullman (it is a little like KKBB).

We just saw Inside Man and LOVED it. (I told you to watch it when you were here....)

OK, sure WNG.
MRT - I'll look it up.

CM (cutiepie's mom) - so NOW I know how to get you out of the woodwork! Did you want to borrow Once now? You'd have a whole month to watch it.
PS - you have to pick up moving boxes.

NoRegrets said...

Oh, ps everyone, well, obviously I DID have time today - tomorrow's our big pow wow planning session. But it was much better doing it this way.

If you're going to be in a scary neighborhood I would suggest staying away from movies that are going to freak you out lol. I say go with renting The Bucket List.

A bit late.....and I don't watch television and rarely, RARELY watch movies.

I think the last one was 'Big Fish'--that oughta tell you something!

(bit of a fidgit bucket, I am....is there such a thing as a 20 minute movie?)

Anonymous said...

YES I do.

Decided to deal with boxes next week, is that OK or too long?

Did you put Inside man on the list?

I might be too late, but I'd suggest Gone Baby Gone, and I put a vote in for The Bucket List, too. Vantage Point was another good one. And for a romantic comedy I'd suggest I Could Never Be Your Woman. Corny, but cute. (Warning: I'm not very discriminating in my romantic comedy choices.)

NoRegrets said...

Women'sdaily - well, you are likely right...
Mel, oh well... (hey, they rhymes!)
Anon-yes ma'am.
Smt.. Thank you for reminding me about Gone Baby Gone! I wanted to see that in the theaters but didn't make it i time.
